I Guess the Guns A Blazin' Was Overkill

Yesterday was Shel's one month appointment with the pediatrician. Based on my previous experiences with Dr. M, I knew her level of sympathy for a Mom with a colicky baby is lacking.

I vividly recall the one month appointment for Peanut. For the previous two weeks, I had dealt with a baby who had cried for hours on end. I was exhausted. Several phone calls to Dr. M's nurse prior to the visit had yielded such bullshit advice as "put his carseat on the dryer" (didn't work), "give him a pacifier" (didn't work), "get a family member to come over and give you a break" (the closest family is 11 hours away), "some babies just need to cry, it's their exercise" (f*ck that). During the checkup, Dr. M asked several questions regarding his crying, what worked (nothing), did he spit up (all the time), what was my diet like (lunch meat and water). Her diagnosis wasn't what I'd wanted to hear, but relieved to hear at the same time.

There was nothing medically wrong with Peanut, he just had a fussy temperament. (You must be f*cking kidding me.)

Apparently I had not made it clear enough the amount of crying I'd endured. Apparently I made it seem that he cried only occasionally.

My concerns weren't going to be minimized this time. For Shel's one month appointment, I was prepared. I had an entire speech planned out in my head, complete with details about the arching back, violent spit-ups, stiffening, crying when awake. I made a list of what I thought might help including baby Zantac, probiotic drops, a chiropractor, and baby Ambien (just kidding, well not really).

I went in with guns a blazin' and a chip on my shoulder. I was going to be heard, damnit.

Amazing how Dr. M's own 3 month old colicky baby has changed her tune. Of course I'd never wish a colicky baby on anyone, but in this case, it certainly helped my cause.

I left Dr. M's office with a prescription for baby Zantac and some prescription colic drops. All I had to say was that she cried all day when awake and that she arched her back. Oh my how the sympathy poured! She knew just how hard it was to deal with a baby that you couldn't soothe. There's just no reason not to give her something if it might help. I'm supposed to call back next week with an update. If she's not significantly better, then we'll try something else.

So, the guns a blazin' was overkill. Heh.

On another great note, Shel now tops the scales at 7 pounds. She's already grown an inch and a half. I'm so relieved to know she's growing and healthy other than the possible acid reflux.

I'm so relieved that the doctor is actually trying to help. Validation feels great!

Hey if it takes the big guns, it takes the big guns.

So happy you were heard.

Really glad to hear that you got something that will hopefully help.

It does doesn't it.
I love that went in with guns a blazin -hell you didn't know if it was going to be necessary or not.
Glad Shel is doing well
(My daughter J had acid reflux too and it went away within a few months thank god)

It always cracks me up how personal experience can completely change one's outlook on stuff... I realize you're trying to be less vindictive or grudge carrying, but I wouldn't be that large - I would wish colicky babies on all those first time Babies R Us mommies!
On a nicer note, I'm so glad everything else is going good and she's grown so much. She seemed so little last week, it's hard to believe she's 7 lbs!

Hope the meds help!

In my experience, sometimes the docs (and more often the nurses and the admin staff) need to get a blast from the big guns!

YEA! I am so glad that he actually listened to you. That seems to be rare these days. Hope the medicine helps Shel.

I feel validated for ya, too. This post really made me smile. Being in need of someone to understand how floundering I feel today, you have made me feel better. Thanks.

I'm actually still smiling over the whole doctor having a colicky baby and changing her tune immediately bit.

Oh yeah all peds. should have difficult babies of their own!

DS had colic and back arching... and spitting up.... and the baby zantac was our savior- also the dose on in can be increased which we had to do.

Perspective is everything!

I hope the stuff works for 'Shel. And for you too.

OH, I'm so glad you got some validation!! I honestly don't know how you deal with that. I, knock wood, have never had to deal with it any longer than a few minutes because of a bad gas attack.

Good luck with the new treatment plan and I hope it helps! :)

Thank G-d for her colicky baby! I'm so glad to hear she gained a little perspective since the last time you went through this. I'm sure the Zantac will help. And Jennie is right ... we had to fiddle with the dose for a while too before finding the right one ... and then slowly increase it as he grew. I hope things will start to get easier for you now.

Glad it went well for you! When I had Luke I had a doctor who would NEVER listen to me- drove me nuts!

Marin was on Zantac too- it's MINTY!?? Who's the genius that thought of that- ohh, these little babies are going to *love* this extra strong pepermint flavor. The pharmacist tried to flavor it for me, but the minty flavor still dominated. Marin HATED it. *Sigh*

I was always going to try to cut out milk and wheat from my diet to see if it helped her, but never got around to it or desperate enough or whatever. None of my babies were colicky, just spit up a ton and had other tummy trouble.

Good luck, hope things look up for you and Shel!

oh i am so glad the dr. was in the position to understand, b/c now that i have had a child with colic/reflux you almost feel as if the world is against you....my dr. said they same exact thing, "you have a baby who likes to cry a lot" ....i mean seriously even if that is what they think, give a little understanding, that is all the mom needs to hear. i look back and cringe and those appts. i hope the meds help, frass is still on zantac, i am slowly weaning her. i would say she is out of colic and very happy, but when she is upset she is UPSET. good luck !! what are the colic drops ??

Feener...the drops are hyosycamine drops. They are used to treat ulcers and colic.

Whenever I get msyelf ready for a fight, there never ends up being one. I hope the remedies help you both.

And I could use some school-age ambien here myself!

I'm so glad you didn't have to fight her for it! Ugh!

It can be infuriating to feel that a physician just ain't listening. Glad you got some baby Zantac, and here's hoping it works to give Shell AND you a break.

It's amazing what a little empathy will do for a physician- my SIL always tells me how unsympathetic her OB was with her first pregnancy. But lo and behold, the second time around, the OB had just had a baby herself, and was like a whole new doctor!

Glad to hear she listened! I just read an article about a "cure for colic" in People magazine. I think it dealt with acid reflux, though, and I think you have that handled!

Glad to hear that you doc gave 'Shel Zantac. I wanted to suggest it, but I didn't want to freak you out! Did she diagnose her with reflux?

Logan arched his back too...sometimes pretty violently. The Zantac helped a lot, but his GERD was bad enough that we needed to add Prevacid into the mix. That was like the sun finally came out!

If she does have reflux, or you have questions about the Zantac or anything else, please email me (cateslife@gmail.com). I remember what it was like, and I would love to help if I can!

Good Luck!

Yay for a supportive pediatrician! Hope the Zantac works.

Cordy was a colicky baby, and sadly, Mira may be proving herself to have colic as well. Tonight we had a three and a half hour screaming period, and yesterday we had a three hour crying period in the morning, followed by another two hours in the afternoon. Ugh.

Unlike Cordy, though, I don't think she has reflux. No signs of it at all. I'm interested in trying probiotics - any idea which ones to use and where to get them?

Glad the ped visit went well! So funny how she changed her tune! Ginger was on Prevacid and Axid. I felt like the Prevacid really worked for her. I have a friend whose baby had three different medicines before they found one what worked for his reflux. So know that there are other medicines out there if the Zantac doesn't work. Hopefully it does!!! I saw an immediate difference with Prevacid.

Good luck with the meds...hope they help!!

Make sure you let us know how the new stuff works!

That is great that the doc changed her tune! My youngest had acid reflux. That child could hit a target across the room with her vomit.

Let us know how Shel is doing on the Zantac. How is it going getting her to take it? I remember that being difficult at first as its strong pepperminty taste can't be masked with special flavorings.

I hope the zantac works. I am thinking the prevacid might be helping mine because we skipped it one night and there was much more hell to pay.

My first is now six. His ped didn't have children at that time and had the same advice as your doc. She just didn't get it. She now has a one year old and was practically throwing the prescription at me and she never mentioned once, this time, that some babies just cry.

I hope things are getting better over there.

HAHAHA ... I read this a few days agon and I'm still gleeful at the thought of this doctor having to "take her medicine" ... and I'm very happy to hear that her experience has helped you and Shel out (or at least now she's willing to try and help). Ok, since I have another little one on the way and reflux runs in the Daddy's family, I'd better stop now. Ashley
