Unfortunate Hair and Pictures That Make Me Want to Scream "You Were Never Fat"

I was trying not to spend time on the computer last night and spend "quality" time with Tate last night, but Modern Marvels was about animal traps and our "quality" time was suddenly kidnapped by an hour long program on ANIMAL TRAPS.

Whew! Sorry for the run-on sentence, but DUDE! Animal traps!? Anyway, I started going through old pictures and found a few to share.

Laugh if you must.

This was a picture from sometime around 1981, in Tulsa, OK. My Dad built that bike for me and had taken off the training wheels. I remember that he was getting ready to teach me to ride it. I also remember how much I liked that T-shirt and those jeans.

Please understand that it was 1989 and this hairstyle was very "in." I think this was a freshman year school picture. You know what's really sad about this unfortunate hair? I thought it looked good, really, really good! It's very apparent now why no boys talked to me.

My very first drivers license. I remember being in a "heavy eye make-up" phase and wearing a lot of black. Please note the weight...105. Makes me want to go back and slap my 16 year old self and scream, "YOU'RE NOT FAT! You'd kill to be this small one day! Enjoy it!!"

Here is my senior picture. Another time I'd like to smack myself for thinking I was fat. I was HAWT at 18!

Here is a picture of Tate and I, sometime around February 1999. We'd just decided to move in together and I was SO BLOND!!!! Oh those were the days. And yes, I thought I was fat then, too.

So there you have it. I've officially embarrassed myself on the Internet.

You make me want to search for some old pics of me now. I wasn't always "round" either (DH hates it when I say I am fat...ROFL). I used to be 109lbs with a perfect hourglass figure. Now I look more like a drop dumpling.

You're so cute. And you know what... you still look pretty much the same. Well, except with better hair. What's your magic secret?

Jennifer said...

Hmm, my secret? I guess it's beer and it's fine preserving qualities!

What?

You have not embarrassed yourself. Those are great pictures. At least you have the guts to post stuff like that!

Based on the dates of your pictures, we are the same age. And I have also plumped from my "fat" high school weight of 100. I certainly had no idea what a stomach roll was...now I do.

That's just creepy. Other than hair colour, we've had the exact same hair styles at the same age-range our whole lives! I'd show you pictures, but right now my sister has hoarded all the family pics of me and she lives in another country right now. Just...weird.

I've got a stack of old photos of me and I've been meaning to do a similar post, with the emphasis on I WAS NOT FAT. Now, I'm fat. I'm scared, though, that in ten years I'm going to look at photos of myself and think I'm not fat now. How fat will I be then?

You're freaking adorable, BTW.

Best excuse I've heard for drinking beer yet - I think I'll add that one to my already impressive repertoire!

Great pics - and very brave of you to share :)

As a fellow former resident of 1989, I can testify that that hair DID INDEED look good. Boys probably didn't talk to you because they were intimidated by your perfect hottt hair.

What cute pictures! I was going through a big box of pictures this past weekend and found all my pictures from high school. Not pretty. I also found a REALLY big hair bow in that box. Scarier yet!

Anonymous said...

How cute are you???!!!

I also had the 1989 hair. That was the year I graduated high school, so I probably had it even worse than you. Ah, the days of Aquanet...

Mommy Daisy said...

Wow, I love looking at old pictures. I think you were "hawt" for sure. Nope, you weren't fat...and still aren't.

Anonymous said...

What is wrong in our heads that makes us THINK we are fat when we aren't??? Did you ever dance? I think dance did it to me...all those mirrors. I look back and see myself much below 100 lbs and think SICK skinny. Why did I feel not skinny then?

Beautiful photos!! :)

Anonymous said...

Great pictures! I really like your senior photo!
And as for the 80s hair... We all had it.

Christy said...

Those are great pics! I totally had that same hair thing going on.

Jean said...

I had the same hair Sophmore year with braces. Not attractive at all, your hair looked way better than mine. For that time period of course.

Stacey said...

Nothing embarassing about being hawt! ;)

These pics were nice. it shows the different stages you were in. I went through them too lol :_

What is that saying "youth is wasted on the young" ?? I remember as a teen feeling fat in a bathing suit. When I look at those photos now, I understand why my Dad always joked about buying a shotgun.

Love your senior portrait and the one of you and Tate too!

Anonymous said...

Well you two are just plain cute. But based on your last entry you were probably drunk, too :)

MamaGeek @ Works For Us said...

Great pics. The best one is definitely that 80's hairspray teased hair-do.

Can you believe that was in??? I had the same thing.

Anonymous said...

You know, I think the same thing every time I look at old pictures. Hell, I think that of me just two months before getting knocked up with Child #1. I really want to be sure LB feels good about her tiny little self and doesn't have the need to "diet" at 12 like I did. So sad.

And you're a-freaking-dorable!

Beth said...

Embarrassed my ass! You were just dying to post awesome pictures of yourself--admit it. :-) I sooo remember the '89 hair phase. LOL! Now I want to go back and find cute pictures of me. Oh wait--there aren't any! You should see my yearbook pictures. Talk about embarrassing!

oh, the 1989 hair. i remember it well. i didn't have the perm, but rather the long-hair "bubble" created by the front of my hair being anchored into a mini beehive by a bevy of barrettes. hawt, oh yeh. i wonder what horrors we committed in former lives to have to have come of age in 1989?

as for the fat...yeh, it's sad to go back, ain't it? if only that girl had known how beautiful she was...

i'm for the plan of starting to believe that now, though. because hell, it probably only gets worse from here. :)

and i think you really are lovely, btw.

OhTheJoys said...

At least you didn't have a permed mullet. I can't say the same.

Anonymous said...

Jennifer, those pictures are pure gold. I don't know if I would be as brave as you. I had me some WICKED BAD hair in high school...

Anonymous said...

Hey good lookin'! I think I have/had 2 of those pictures! For the record, I never EVER thought of you as fat or overweight in the least!

Phoenix said...

2 things: One, I had the hair too....it was so in. I loved the first pic, you were a cute kid. Two, you of the "you people post too much" talk the other day. WOman there are three new posts for me to read and I swear I was here just yesterday. THREE.

;)

Its crazy how teenage girls can't feel good about themselves isn't it? I adore the pig tails by the way.

Unknown said...

Freaking adorable.

And I look at pictures now and cannot believe what teen perception did to my weight too.

Although I was nowhere as skinny as you.

Anonymous said...

You are a brave woman. And you're still adorable (and NOT fat).

shauna said...

Oh come on--you look(ed) great! Wishing I could embarrass myself like that!

Anonymous said...

I dig your 1989 ringlets. LOL! However, you really looked hot in your driver's license. I can't even see the "heavy eye make-up" though. And your senior picture...wow!

Lisa said...

you are a beauty!

Heather said...

You look awesome in all of the pictures! Even the 1989...the hair back then did rock. I was super cool that way too!

Christina said...

You look fabulous in all of those pictures!

I also wish I could go back and slap my teen self who thought she was so huge. Granted, I was nowhere close to 105, but looking back, I was a healthy weight.

NicciN said...

Thanks for sharing the photos. I have had that same moment before -- looking at old pictures of times when I was sure that I was fat and really seeing that it so wasn't true. How sad it is that we spend so much time thinking about that when we are young.

Anonymous said...

I LOVE the hair! Do you remember "Luv Its" and "Ditto" jeans???? How about Dolphin shorts?????

tripleZmom said...

My first driver's license also said 105 - and I also thought I was fat. I'll go right back to the '80's with you and help slap those girls around!

BTW, totally cute pictures. I often ask myself (as the teenage clerk's eyes glance at the cute 20 year old behind me instead of paying attention to my order, is it better to have loved being hot than never to have been hot at all?)

Marty, a.k.a. canape said...

The hair history alone is quite intriguing.

And my driver's license never said 105. Ever.

Anonymous said...

love these...you have great hair no matter what color it is. :)

EE said...

Will 80s hair ever come back? I hope so...I missed those teased bangs.
You are gorgeous!

Anonymous said...

Don't you HATE the time you spent thinking you were fat? I look back and could kick myself in the ass.

Anonymous said...

I know I'm way behind on commenting. Don't even know if you'll catch this one, but I loved the pics! We should all do this - what a riot it would be. I had the exact same hair and sister WE WERE cool! I love looking and laughing at old pictures, but at the same time it's depressing because even though I still feel like I'm in my 20s the pictures are proof that I am actually getting older. Damn.

Cherann said...

I remember that Jr. High Hairdo. I'm a product of the Born in 1975 crew too!

Cate said...

I do the same thing when I see old pictures of myself from highschool...I seriously thought I was fat? What would the highschool me say if she saw the all-grown-up-mom-of-two??? I shudder to think....

Anonymous said...

Okay, I WISHED I had that hair in 1989--and it was hot!

I am so incredibly behind on blog reading (had to take a break so as to keep my head above water at work), but had to comment that I own that same sweater you are wearing in the last picture...Old Navy many years ago. I think perhaps I finally donated it in my last closet purging though.

Anonymous said...
