Fear and Loathing in Las Restaurantes

I am a restaurant snob. For five long years of my life, I worked as a hostess at Ruby Tuesday. This experience has made me unwilling to eat at chain restaurants. When I see commercials for TGIFriday's 3-course meals or Ruby Tuesday's "garden" bar, I feel ill. Applebee's, Chili's, O'Charley's, or anyplace with a bunch of tchotchkes hanging on the wall are all on my "no eat" list. (On an aside, this feeling does not extend to breakfast spots, as I love, love, love Cracker Barrel and IHOP. Go figure.) Buffets are also on this list. The thought of retrieving my dinner from beneath a sneeze guard is just plain unappetizing. This restaurant snobbery is actually something Tate and I see eye to eye on.

Not that it happens often anyway, but when we do eat out, we prefer to eat at local establishments. We are particularly fond of brew pubs and places with a whole-in-the-wall type atmosphere. Even with my love of these kinds of restaurants I get positively nervous trying a new place. My fear is ridiculous, but real. First, I worry about the way the whole being seated thing works. Sometimes it's not obvious when you first walk in, do you seat yourself or do you wait for a hostess? I hate standing around looking like an idiot. I don't know why, but I don't want them to know it's my first time there. Irrational? Yes.

Some of these restaurants expect it's customers to order the correct way. I like to rehearse what I'm going to order in situations such as these. This is especially true in BBQ restaurants and any place with the word "bistro" in it's name. I fear stage fright and ridicule if I order the wrong way or mispronounce a word on the menu. My stomach gets all knotted up whenever it's the kind of place that you order from the counter and have to read the menu up on the wall behind the cashier. I always feel so rushed and it's always so hard to figure out what to order. It's even worse if there are experienced orderers standing behind you, waiting to place their orders.

Also, before trying a new restaurant, I like to know if it's kid-friendly. I don't want to walk into a divey looking place, thinking it's going to be all noisy and therefore kid-friendly, only to find that it's some swanky joint, complete with matching waitstaff all dressed in head to toe black and white table cloths. Places like these look down upon us breeders who show up carrying two kids and ask for a high chair. Eating in a place like this is sure to make me sweat. Really, I literally sweat when I get nervous like this. And sweating in a posh dining spot is typically looked down upon.

It's making less and less sense as to why it is I don't like chain restaurants, isn't it?! At least at Longhorn Steakhouse, you know what to expect. Maybe it's the adrenalin rush I get when I try a new restaurant?

So there you have it. I'm officially a weirdo, who likes to unnecessarily stress herself out for the sake of a decent meal.

Come on man! Pick up yer gd socks already!

On the restaurant note- I hate hate hate the Outback Steakhouse-- the waiters actually SIT DOWN NEXT TO YOU. Can you imagine!? Oh, the invasion of space! It's horrible. (except I love their salmon- so...tra la la...we get take-out!)

LOL Jennifer! I wouldn't say weirdo, necessarily. Quirky, definitely! I don't care much for chains, either, but the salad and breadsticks from Olive Garden are calling my name. Mmmmm. Anyway, stay strong on the standoff! In my house, those would be my dirty socks, and Ed would be the irritated party. Oops!

i'm amazed and impressed you can live your life w/o chain restaurants. The Mr. & i are sick of them as well, but we don't have many choices otherwise.

there are a few, but we dine out about once a week, so we need more than 4 options. it doesn't help that the non-chains are usually pretty nice (read: more expensive).

good luck on the running, and on the not picking up socks.

maybe tate will read this blog entry and get the hint!!

We were used to live there was (truly) only one legit restaurant - an Applebee's. Let's just say we will NEVER enter this establishment again. Used to love Chili's but that was back in college on bottomless margarita night... The only thing (like you) that makes me nervous is finding myself at an unkidfriendly restaurant with hungry kids...

WHOAH! My typing finger must be broken, I meant "Where we used to live..."

I have NEVER visited a Bistro out of fear of looking stupid! I don't know what happens inside those doors!
Someday I should send you a pic of my 4 year standoff on Mike's protein shake cups, which include my glassware and Harpo's cups of all things- the powdery shit makes a thick residue at the bottom and sides of the glass and on the stirring spoon that must be scraped or it cooks on in the dishwasher. My friends are well aware that dirty cups will surround my sink when they come over and EVERYONE knows why.

You must be kidding, is he just trying to give you something to post about!?! Good Luck!!

Um, excuse me chicky?

I'm calling you out.

You forgot Moe's on your list of chain restaurants you'll eat at.

And how about Panera?

At least now I know what I was smelling that last time we ate together.....B.O.!

I know what you mean about restaurants. I think the local places are the best.

Did the socks just move? Or are these a fresh pair? Silly man!

I'm a restaurant snob too! But I will only take our spawn to loud chain places like Longhorn or Applebees because I know she'll be tolerated.

I'm lucky enough to live in a part of the country ripe with new swanky restaurants and hip little cities. When we do go out, I like to try a different one each time. But, I also get nervous ordering from behind the counter place, like Panera and Starbucks. TOO MUCH PRESSURE!

Phoenix said...

Now he's just fucking with you.

I love new places, but have some of the same issues...so I do eat at Chili's and places like that. If I can get something I will enjoy and not have a panic attack, making me basically not enjoy my meal, I'll do it. But I'm a food snob as well, so a lot of those places, I will only order one of two things.

Hey, you think we may be long lost twins?

there is little that's more repulsive than a chain restaurant salad bar....ew.

I'm actually a fan of (some) chain restaurants but that's mostly because of their kid-friendliness. Also, if I'd worked at one, I'm sure I'd have a completely different outlook.

I would agree with you about places that don't make it obvious if you seat yourself or wait for the host/hostess. That is not fun - especially if it's your first time there.

And if I can't pronounce it - at least in a way I think is correct - I just point at the menu. Who cares if the server gets offended.

I usually prefer local restaurants...but I have also been known to eat at a chain or two.

Do you feel the same way about local places (or regional) that have multiple locations? Or is it just the national chains?

Tuesday Girl said...

I am not a fan of chain restaurants except Cracker Barrel and Carrabas.

Anonymous said...

That's a funny little quirk of yours. I'm just so happy I get to eat out, I could care less which place it is, as long as I don't have to cook!!

Oh, Tate. You are just trying to lose your sex priviledges!! You should see our media room. I won't set foot in there as it's Pup's room & therefore dIsGuStInG

Heather...I do love Moe's, Panera, and Atlanta Bread. I suppose they are chains, but they're good, so I'll allow them :)!

I know you can hear me...Mostly it's national chains that I don't like. But I really love the kind of restaurant that there is only ONE of, and is completely unique.

Marie Green said...

I typically don't like chains either. But we have learned to compromise if the children are with us. Sometimes it's worth the "chain atmosphere" to eat in peace with the kiddos.

(I do however love Olive Garden- and I rarely admit that to anyone. I like to sneak off to eat there with just a few trusted people, people who won't think I'm nerdy or uncultured or something because of my love for chain garlic breadstick and yummy salad!)

Pregnantly Plump said...

The seating question isn't my only worry at new restaurants. I also have the panic of do we pay at the door or do we pay the waiter. I admit this happened a lot more when we lived in Tennessee. The local places were so casual that we never knew for sure what to do. At the end of our meal, we would try to be stealthy and watch other diners, in hopes of not having to look silly when asking the waiter.

Toni said...

Okay, I have to say that your post made me feel so much better about myself! I, too, rehearse my order before doing it and I freak completely out when I have to eat at a new place because of all the reasons you mentioned. I also hate it when a place I am familiar with changes out the freakin' menu. Are they trying to make me dissolve into a puddle of sweat?

And, c'mon, dude, pick up yer socks!

Stacey said...

I like divey hole in the wall diner-y kind of places. We've found some of the best places on road trips. You ever watch Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on Food Network ?
I swear my next vacation I'm going to every place they feature.

I don't do Cracker Barrel cause they are gay-haters but we do love Le Peep and other various breakfast spots.

And I could break you of your restaurant fear very easily because we eat out WAY WAY WAY too often.

We, too, mostly like local stuff and don't really care for major chains... unless, of course, you are talking about Olive Garden who are Declan's all time fave... and also gay-haters which proves I am complete hypocrite if it stands in the way of my breadsticks and alfredo sauce.

OH - the socks. Is it something on the Y chromosome that makes disgusting, stinking, dirty WHITE socks not revolting. Because they are completely revolting to me. Not to my husband or 3yr old though.

Annie said...

I'm so not a restaurant snob lol! I figure if I get to go out and sit down and have my dinner handed to me, one that I didn't have to cook - it's all good! It probably helps that I have never ever worked in the restaurant business, chains or otherwise so I have no clue what goes on behind the scenes and so I remain in blissful ignorance :)

Why did all these people have to mention Olive Garden, and why did I have to read this post just before dinner time? mmmmm

Victoria said...

I feel the same way about all of this -- the seating, the ordering, the annoyingly "cute" chain restaurants.

And the picking up after the husband. Heheh.

Cathy, Amy and Kristina said...

We stick to the local places too. There something so cozy and comforting about them.

TZT said...

I only wind up at those eateries if there are no other options, I've had fast food once that week already and I'm too far from home. They usually just make me feel like I paid $12-$20 for a Stouffer's meal.

I'm a sucker for Joe's Crab Shack, though.

I was a waitress for many, many years, and I have to say that corporate chain restaurants offer you the best chance for survival! You could eat off the floor at most Olive Gardens, and a visit from the Health Department is welcome at most tchotchke-laden places, not feared! I'd love to step outside my comfort zone and visit a mom & pop place, but without the checks and balances corporate standards offer...I'm chicken!

I am usually not a fan of chain restaurants either, but God help me, I just salivate at the thought of a Ruby Tuesday's cheeseburger. The service? A two. But the burger? A ten.

But normally, I go for the one-and-onlys.

Here the only chains they have are American.. Ironic? I think yes. We love to eat at the mom and pop Ramen place a few steps from our house. They also encourage you to lounge and enjoy..

Poor TATE!! Where is the laundry room? HA HA !! I am sending you standoff vibes!! You will win this one...

For easy ordering do what my hubbie does, asks the waiter for his recommendation or what he likes. It's either that or the steak.

Anonymous said...

I also have some of those fears when I'm in a new restaurant, especially the process of ordering.

Nell said...

I've never worked in a chain restaurant, but I have worked in lots of little restaurants, and I'm a total snob too. I can't help it. The food is just better, the staff always seem friendlier (in a genuine way) and I like an intimate atmosphere. Sometimes I get intimidated, but usually, if I admit ignorance up front, I find that people are nice to me.

Anonymous said...

I have only worked at one restaurant - and it's locally famous and beloved - and I would NEVER eat at it after working there.

I feel much better at the chain places. When I was in MA everyone hated the chains, but by the time I left I think I had made a few converts.

On the Border anyone? I'm hungry...

Anonymous said...

I am so a restaurant snob. I hate the chains. And buffets gross me out. Especially here when they are sometimes referred to as "smorgs". Doesn't that sound almost as disgusting as the word "moist"?

Anonymous said...

We seldom eat at restaurants. I think it's because we haven't found one that met our standards yet.

Thanks for stopping by Central Illinois Life! I feel the same way about restaurants. I want to eat somewhere local and I hate to have to mull over an order when someone who knows what they want is behind me. If I'm at a new sit down restaurant I always ask the waiter staff what they think is good. As long as it's not the most expensive item on the menu, I'm likely to try it.

Dang. I already know the next chapter of the sock stand off. I hate it when I get behind and then read out of order.

I also hate chain restaurants. Hate them. With a burning passion.

omg...i thought i was the only one! the worries of seating methods and ordering/pronouncing things wrong, etc...that is so totally me! there have actually been times where i just pointed to it in the menu instead of trying to pronounce, 'cause i knew i was gonna say it wrong!
