In Memoriam...A View of Summer TV
I hate to admit that I watch a lot of TV. A whole very lot, way too much, what the hell else am I supposed to do when I rarely go anywhere amount of TV.
Back in the good ol' days of summer, when summer vacation was fun because it was YOU on break, summer TV was great. Sure it was nothing but reruns all summer long, but it gave you a chance to catch up on shows you missed.
Now summertime TV is filled with nothing but the rejects, or the shows that would never make it in the fall lineup. Unfortunately, for a less than excited about reality TV gal, we get gems such as "So You Think You Can Dance?," "America's Got Talent," "Age of Love." and "Pirate Master." Seriously, I can't stomach watching shows where people have NO talent and they aren't even funny, they're just painful to watch. At least with those first episodes of "American Idol," you can laugh at the people who are convinced of their star-making talent. And the pirate show? I get that they are riding the coattails of the popularity of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, but I'm just not interested. Not even for a little peak.
I do, however, like some reality TV. Can I explain to you in words just how thrilled I am at the genius of MTV for returning the Vegas cast to the Palms for another season? Sure they are only going to be there two weeks, but in that time all sorts of fun can ensue. If only "Laguna Beach" and "The Hills" had summer seasons. But alas, they don't, and I mourn.
On a very emotional note, I would like us all to pause for the passing of my dear, dear friends, The Sopranos. Pausing.......
Tonight marks the end of what I have thought for years was the best show evah! Sure they made me wait EONS between seasons. Sure I have been tortured through many a boring or WTF? episode. Sure they are very, very bad people. But I love them and I will miss them. When Tony dies tonight, which I'm sure he will, I will cry like a big sissy.
Arrividerci "The Sopranos". You will be missed.
As will all the good regular season programming. Can't wait 'til fall when we are freed from all the reject shows.

13 People are even more brilliant:
Can't wait for the Sopranos tonight!!! I try to read more in the summer and catch up on all the movies I never get to watch. But it would be nice if they showed the series shows so people who missed it could get hooked. *sigh*
I love love love reality TV..And So you think you can dance is my favorite...of course.
Sopranos is killing me softly. I'm thinking of buying the entire thing on DVD...
Yes! There's nothing worse than being chained to a chair nursing and having nothing to watch on TV. Although we've been enjoying The Next Best Thing - a celebrity impersonator contest.
I'm so with ya. And, of course, I've been pining for TiVo for awhile now...and we JUST GOT IT! Yay me! Except it's crappy summer TV time and there's nothing to really record...except for every single Thomas the Train episode.
I feel exactly the same about the summer tv situation. I recently posted everything I have on my TiVo season pass, it was embarrassingly long... but now... it records nothing for me (except General Hospital) and everything for Zoe and my husband. I'm thankful now for Netflix!
Actually Jen, I beg to differ.
Top Chef
Top Chef All Stars
and last but not least, a brand new season of Big Love!!!!
Life is good!
Sara (suburban oblivion), I agree and thank you for reminding me of Top Chef All Stars and Big Love. So it's not all a wash!
I fell out love after Seinfeld and Friends. I'm such a TV dweep.
ok, i am a huge tv addict, reality no less and even i am not interested in that pirate booty show. however i do enjoy my MTV inferno ? nothing like a late 30's mom watching those idoits on tv.
Oh my gosh! I am so excited to know there is another Mommy out there that watches The Hills and Laguna Beach.
Two rays of sunshine for you:
The season premiere of Big Love is tomorrow.
And if you haven't watched The Riches yet, look for the first season's reruns (although as a long, long time fan of Eddie Izzard I am a bit biased).
FWIW, I think Tony won't die, this last episode will just have him gathering his newspaper like any other day. Of course, I am on the west coast and right now the show is starting so I have to go. I'm either right and you think I looked for a spoiler online in order to make myself look ohsosmart, or I am wrong and you think I am an idiot.
I know...it always throws me for a loop when in the summer they change the lineup and my usual shows are TAKEN OFF. Right now I am cursing Nick for taking of Blue's Clues on and off...obviously they never had to deal with a 2 yr old with a Blue Addiction.
And talk about reject shows...the good thing is I watch less TV then...
I kinda like the reality tv show called "The Next Best Thing". They try to find celebrity impersonators.
